Jae was born the progeny of an interdimensional wayfarer lost to the world, and were constantly ushered through rifts and realms alongside their younger sibling. Even with such extraordinary beginnings, Jae remained something of an outsider—neither of one world nor the next.Jae was no ordinary vampire, they bore the traits of a Higher Vampire: a being of ancient blood, unchained from the base thirst of its lesser kin. Unlike other children of the night who consumed blood to survive, Jae's hunger was for something far more unique—the living essence of memory and soul.Even in youth, they were known to drink not with cruelty, but with the delicacy of an archivist or artisan. Memories were not consumed whole, but savored in slivers—preserved, aged, revisited.As the centuries wore on, Jae found solace in creation. They became enamored with viniculture, discovering in it an echo of their own consumption—the fermenting of time, the distillation of spirit, and the slow artistry of transformation. Thus, the collector became a cultivator.

In pursuit of a dominion for their craft, and feeling the effects of a long and isolated life, they were led to a vineyard long forsaken by the living: the Château Vino Mortem.This château, dwelling between dimensions, is veiled from mortal eyes. Home to years of torment and experimentation, its soil had turned rotten and volatile. The vines that grow there—both grape and rose—are unlike any found upon Earth or Eden. Their hues are darker than wine and shadow, their fragrance thick with longing. They bloom in stillness, as though awaiting some unspoken grief.Jae set to work reviving the land.
Their vintages began as bitter things—acrid with ancient hate. But with patience and a gentle, guiding hand, the soul of the vineyard was cleansed. A new era began for the château. Word spread of the wines that could awaken visions of past lives in mortals and stir ancient grief in the immortal.However, these rare and sought-after vintages could not be purchased—not even by the wealthiest.Instead, one must be invited to Château Vino Mortem to experience a night of magical wonder. Invitations are never extended; rather, they find their guests—tucked into a traveler’s coat lining, or fluttering like a forgotten leaf by the roadside.The chosen are welcomed with opulence and delight, indulging in the vineyard’s forbidden luxuries.

The price of entry has remained unchanged through the centuries: A single drop of blood offered to the soil. And one memory too beloved to surrender. From these two offerings, the Rosé de Souvenir is crafted.In the end, no one is ever permitted to return, and thus the legend persists.Château Vino Mortem drifts ever between worlds, hidden by choice and bound by secrecy.But should one find themselves lost on a moonless road and smell roses blooming in the cold, they may be nearer the vineyard than they know.

Long before the Chateau bore its current name, Challe was already there, bound to the land by a cruel curse. A shape-shifting imp with a love for mischief and a knack for slipping through dimensions, Challe once meddled in a binding ritual he should’ve left alone. As punishment, he was tethered to the vineyard grounds, his freedom sealed with ancient magic that made him part of the estate itself.Over the centuries, the vineyard changed hands many times, and each new owner quickly discovered the “usefulness” of the strange little creature lurking in the shadows. Challe was dragged into servitude time and again, forced to work the land, maintain the cellars, and amuse the whims of cruel lords who saw his curse as a convenience.That changed the day the vineyard was claimed by a peculiar new master.Challe had seen the horrors inflicted by the chateau's previous masters—enslavement, torment, or worse. So he kept to the shadows, shifting forms to watch silently, waiting for the cruelty to begin.But it never came.No summons, no chains, no forced oaths or binding spells. Just a quiet presence in the old manor, tending vines by moonlight and blending alchemical flavors with eerie grace. When Challe finally revealed himself, expecting to be compelled into servitude again, the vampire offered him a glass of wine and an empty chair.Intrigued and disarmed, Challe lingered. Then helped. Then stayed.Now, Challe is an inseparable—if slightly annoying—companion to the vampire vintner. He lounges in sunless halls, pesters his master about unfinished bottling schedules, and morphs into whatever form is most inconvenient at the moment (or helpful, when he feels like it). By choice, not coercion, he serves as caretaker of Chateau Vino Mortem’s odd little operations, even sometimes writing invitations to the Chateau when his master forgets.And while he may grumble, Challe takes pride in the place—and in the vampire who saw value in something everyone else ignored.
